There is no official auction catalog yet, but Stack's Bowers has issued press material on some of the collections that will be auctioned at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore, Maryland, Nov. 14-17, 2019.
The John W. Adams Collection of Comitia Americana will be at Stack's Bowers on Thursday, November 14, 2019. Stack's Bowers calls this collection “unparalleled in the two centuries since American collectors have sought to gather these medals together.”
The silver 1871 Daniel Morgan at Cowpens medal, unique in private hands, is noteworthy. This medal last sold at auction in 2001, breaking a 23-year-old world record for the most valued American medal.
The “infamous “NE” Pine Tree Shilling will also be at the Baltimore Auction, according to Stack's Bowers. The counterstamp on this coin from 1652 has fascinated scholars for nearly 150 years. The obverse has an inverted monogram NE counterstamp below the tree roots, echoing the Massachusetts Bay Colony's eponymous shillings' NE punch.
On Sept. 19, Stack's stated on their blog that the auction would feature Washingtonia from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania's William Spohn Baker Collection
Washington medal collectors don't require an explanation, but Baker pioneered a system for displaying medals that has served this niche market for nearly a century.Baker collected almost 1,000 portrait engravings and 1,100 medals before dying in 1897. Stack's November Baltimore sale will include the whole medals collection.
An MS-67 NGC 1863 three-dollar gold piece stands out. With a mintage of 5,039, just 300 are estimated to exist, most EF or AU.Mint State grades are unusual.
In February 2016, Stack's handled a top example of this coin from the Pogue Collection. That MS-68 PCGS coin sold for $123,375.Another MS-63 PCGS sold for $16,800 at the August ANA Auction. We're excited to see how much this coin sells for at auction.
