Republican state senator to seek northeastern Wisconsin congressional seat.

Washington, DC  – A Republican state senator from northern Wisconsin has declared his intention to run for the vacant congressional seat. The announcement was made on Monday.

The 8th Congressional District seat is currently being held by Mike Gallagher. On Monday, Andre Jacque of De Pere declared that he would be running for the position. After Gallagher's refusal to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas irritated his fellow Republicans, he suddenly declared last month that he would not be seeking re-election.

Hours after Gallagher announced his decision not to run again, Roger Roth, a former state senator from Appleton, declared his candidacy. Oshkosh, Green Bay, and Appleton make up the 8th Congressional District, which is overwhelmingly Republican. Another potential candidate is Republican consultant Alex Bruesewitz.

The state assembly was Jacque's initial electoral venue in 2010. He is a well-known conservative who has been serving since 2018 in the Wisconsin state Senate, where he represents the 1st District in the state's northeast

In 2026, he will not be up for re-election to the state Senate. He would be required to resign from his position as senator and take the oath of office in January of next year if he were to win the House seat.
